The Southern Crab Nebula In Centaurus (PK315+09.1 Hen 2-104)
A nebula in the constellation Centaurus that is in the process of evolving into a planetary nebula.
I came across the Southern Crab Nebula and tried photographing it.
While the Crab Nebula in Messier 1 is a planetary nebula formed from a supernova explosion, the Southern Crab Nebula is a symbiotic nebula where two stars influence each other, causing gas to spread out in an hourglass shape. It's said to be in the same state as the famous Eta Carinae star.
NASA/ESA images show a double ring around the stars, with this gas expansion beyond.
My equipment couldn't capture this double ring at all.
The shape of the gas resembles crab legs, which is probably why it's called the Southern Crab Nebula.
It certainly looks more like a crab than the Crab Nebula in M1.

Because the object is not particularly bright at magnitude 14.2, it seems that very few amateurs have photographed it. There was one person who photographed it in LRGB and one who photographed it in SHO, but when I tried taking some test shots myself, I could barely make it out in Ha, so I only picked up the object in Ha.
NASA/ESA
